And we need your help
Poor internet connectivity hurts student learning.
Several weeks ago, I received a phone call from a salesperson inquiring how on-line learning has been working for our school. He was especially interested in students’ at-home internet connections. I told him that we were in terrible shape- that our geography and small population (among other factors) meant that 75% of our kids did not have a reliable internet connection. He responded enthusiastically that his company could probably get all of our families connected quickly and affordably.
I explained that for Bolinas-Stinson, reliable, affordable internet was like the sword in the stone… many a mighty hero had stepped forth to extract it, but our “King Arthur” had yet to arrive. I suggested he not get his hopes up.
He said his company had worked with small rural districts before with great success and was pretty sure they would be able to do the job. I told him the school’s address. I could hear him tapping on his keyboard, pulling up his coverage map of California. Silence. After a long pause he said, “Wow… uh, you guys have a real problem. I’ve never seen anything like that before; it’s a like a dead zone.”
He said he could send us a sample hotspot but that doubted it would work. “It might be worth a try.” I thanked him and explained that we had tried hot spots for months with limited success. He said he’d talk to some other people at his company and check back later if he had other ideas.
He hasn’t called back.
Remote learning during the pandemic has been a challenge for students and families across the country but in the Bolinas-Stinson School District that challenge has been far worse than what others have faced. This is especially troubling because while poor internet connectivity impacts all students, it has had an especially hard impact on our high number of lower- income families. For example, Bolinas-Stinson has one of the highest percentages in Marin of students who qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program (46%). We have found that those students are more likely to miss out on learning activities than their peers because of lack of access to the internet.
Several months ago, the school district formed a Connectivity Committee. That small group has been trying to find a way to solve this problem using local know-how, resources and enthusiasm. I am thrilled to report that they are on the verge of success.
The long, hard experiment with hotspots (a solution that has worked to a minimal level in places with better cell coverage) has proved frustrating, unsustainable and ineffective. Hotspots gave us just enough spotty success to want to keep trying, but in the end it was clear that they were not the answer. Satellite service did not provide enough coverage either.
GREAT NEWS: We have a solution
Recently the committee had major breakthrough: They found a potential provider and The Board of Trustees committed significant funding that was matched quickly by a private donor to get the project rolling. (Fundraising efforts are continuing with great success.) This will pay for Muir Beach LAN to provide the infrastructure we need to get families connected through a reliable Fixed Wireless system. The school will also be able to subsidize home installation and service for families. Our aim is to ensure that all students will be connected at home with reliable internet that their families can afford. (This has the added benefit of providing a way for other residents to access improved internet service to their homes.)
