Dear Bolinas-Stinson School Families and Community,
WELCOME SARA LIEBER - OUR NEW 5TH & 6TH GRADE TEACHER!
Sara is our new teacher who will be team teaching with Willow Regnery in the 5th & 6th grade. Sara has an amazing background in designing garden curriculum, implementing nature projects, and teaching hands-on lessons to students through gardening. Sara worked as a garden manager and educator at Love Apple Farms in Santa Cruz, a small-scale biodynamic farm that also served as a nature classroom. Sara oversaw the production of 300+ varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers; and led workshops in growing, composting, propagating, cheese making, and other homesteading subjects.
Sara later worked in garden and nutrition education for Sierra Harvest, a non-profit food access organization in Nevada City, CA. She focused on nutrition education by bringing cooking and gardening lessons into K-6 classrooms and teaching students on the educational farm. Merging her passion for teaching and gardening inspired Sara to get her teaching certification. Sara is thrilled to be a part of the Bolinas-Stinson School community and is already getting to know students and staff. She is looking forward to digging deeper into all the academic subjects and incorporating hands-on gardening and nature projects into the curriculum as much as possible. Let us know if you would like to volunteer to help Sara get our garden in shape - she would appreciate extra hands!
SITE-SPECIFIC NATURAL HISTORY ART INSTALLATION FOR BOLINAS-STINSON SCHOOL
Don Jolley is working with staff and our 7th & 8th graders to create a one of a kind Bolinas-Stinson art installation in front of the main office. Don and the kids are using the gray whale bones which have been laying behind the middle school waiting for their moment to shine! Thanks to Don, staff, and our middle schoolers, these bones will be reassembled to create a one of a kind articulated whale bone sculpture in front of our school that will weather naturally over time.
SAVE THE SWEET TREATS FOR HOME PLEASE
Parents please remind your child not to bring candy or soda to school. I notice that students are sharing and consuming these sweet treats during snack and lunch rather than eating other healthy items in their lunch. We try to provide our students with healthy, organic, and tasty choices in our school lunch program. Thank you for your help.
REMINDER TO KEEP PHONES IN BACKPACKS
School policy requires students keep their phones turned off and in their backpacks during school hours. Please remind your child that their phones will be confiscated if we see them in pockets or out during the school day.
A parent recently shared this TED Talk with me regarding the impact that parents can have on their child's self image and how they interact with social media. We have all heard about the dangers of social media on developing young minds and links to anxiety, depression, and much more. This talk gives hope to parents and raises some important questions we should be addressing as a school community. This topic is so important, our school will be hosting information nights, screenings, and a venue for discourse for parents and community members on this topic in the fall. Please take a minute to watch this compelling video: Can flip phones end our social media addiction? by Collin Kartchner, from the TEDx Salt Lake City Series.
