Fifth Grade

We learn how to:

  • Log in with a user name and password
  • Open a program on a Mac or PC
  • Type with proper fingering on the QWERTY keyboard
  • Save a file into the Documents folder inside the Home folder
  • Format documents with pictures and styles
    Create and work with Excel Documents
  • Create and present PowerPoint presentations
  • Locate and open a previously-saved file
  • Navigate the Internet safely
  • Perform advanced Internet searches
  • Quit a program
  • Log out and shut down a computer

"Blood-red moon" Assignment:

  1. Open Microsoft Word. Put your name and today's date in the header section of the page.
  2. Type up the page as shown on the "Blood-red moon" handout,
    except for the moon picture and its caption (see step 5).
  3. Save the assignment to your Documents folder as "Blood-red moon."
  4. Click on the first line of text and go to Insert > Text Box.
  5. Click here, then drag the picture of the moon into the text box in your Word document.
  6. Type the caption shown on the handout beneath the picture of the moon.

Basic Writing Assignment:

  1. Open Microsoft Word. A new, blank document will appear.
  2. Double-click in the header at the top of the page.
    1. Hit the tab key twice (right-align) and type your name. Hit return.
    2. Hit the tab key twice (right-align) and type today's date or the date you wrote your paper. Hit return.
    3. Hit the tab key once (center align) and type a title. Make one up if necessary. Hit return.
  3. Double-click in the body of the page and type your document.
  4. Save the document (Command + S or File > Save).
    1. Enter a decriptive name in the Save As: box . You can use the title from step 2c.
    2. Make sure your Documents folder is selected.
    3. Click the Save button.
    4. Select your document and make it double-spaced.
      1. Command + A or Edit > Select All.
      2. Command + 2 for double-spacing.
  5. Save the document (Command + S or File > Save).

Optional Steps:

  1. If asked, select the text in the box below and copy it (Command + C or Edit > Copy).
    This writing assignment demonstrates my computer skills. I know how to log on to the computer, open up a word-processing program and create a document with my name, date and a title in the header. I am learning how to type with the correct fingers on the keyboard. I know how to save the documents and open them later.
  2. Double-click in the footer at the bottom of the page.
    1. Paste the text you copied in step 5 into the footer with Command + A or Edit > Paste.
  3. Save the document (Command + S or File > Save).
  4. Print your document to the lab-laser printer (Command + P or File >Print).
