Definition of Total Physical Response

TPR is a hands-on approach to second language learning in which the  teacher infuses language through commands and by which the student responds with kinesthetic (body) movement to show total comprehension. 

The TPR (Total Physical Response) teaching style was developed in response to the observation that "Adults...in first language acquistion, manipulate children's physical behavior by a massive number of commands.  The infant becomes ready to talk only after many months of moving in response to gentle directions from adults." (from Enseñando en Español por Medio de Acción. Bernie Segal-Cook.)  In short, the TPR approach to second language learning espouses that understanding the spoken language should be developed in advance of speaking it.
