k,1,2 goes into TPR Storytelling of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" en Espanol

In May, the k,1,2 classes have been learning the "backdrop vocabulary" for our newest TPR story: Rizos de Oro y los Tres Osos." We have been playing with models of beds (camas), bowls (platos), spoons (cucharras), chairs (sillas), and teddybears (osos).  We have been talking about size:  chiquito, mediano, and grande, and characteristics: hard (duro), soft (suave), and perfecto (perfect).  Next step: reading the story!

Definition of Total Physical Response

TPR is a hands-on approach to second language learning in which the  teacher infuses language through commands and by which the student responds with kinesthetic (body) movement to show total comprehension.

The TPR (Total Physical Response) teaching style was developed in response to the observation that "Adults...in first language acquistion, manipulate children's physical behavior by a massive number of commands.  The infant becomes ready to talk only after many months of moving in response to gentle directions from adults." (from Enseñando en Español por Medio de Acción. Bernie Segal-Cook.)  In short, the TPR approach to second language learning espouses that understanding the spoken language should be developed in advance of speaking it.

Total Physical Response Spanish Storytelling

Hola!  Today in the 5th/6th grade class we worked on comprehending  and reading aloud a short Spanish story.
Using pre-taught TPR vocabulary, students took a short true/false quiz to demonstrate understanding and began rehearsing skits pertaining to the text.
